William Bulluck
Thanks for visiting my website and taking the time to learn about why I became a financial advisor.
My story starts in Rocky Mount, NC, where I was born and raised. I didn't grow up in the finance industry — I grew up in the auto industry. My family owns and operates the local Chevrolet dealership, a business that has been in our family for over 100 years. We lived a comfortable life, and from a young age I was fortunate enough to never worry about our financial situation.
That changed in 2008 with the Great Recession and the subsequent bankruptcy of General Motors, Chevrolet's parent company. At the time, I was working at the dealership the summer after my junior year of high school. Nobody knew what was going to happen next. Rumors swirled that we could lose our franchise and be forced to shut down. Every week, we held our breath hoping we would survive. The financial stability and security I had always known was suddenly on the verge of disappearing.
What struck me most, though, wasn't just the uncertainty my family faced — it was watching how it affected our employees. These were people I had grown up around, people who felt like extended family. Some had worked for us for decades, and now they were facing the very real possibility of losing their income. The hardest part was knowing that we were all dealing with consequences of events completely outside our control.
This story does have a happy ending. My family kept the dealership. My dad still runs it today, and many of those same employees are still there. But that experience never left me — and it's what ignited my passion for becoming a financial advisor.
The reality is that families are pushed to the brink by unexpected life events every single day, and those stories don't always end happily. It might be a major economic crisis, the sudden loss of a loved one, or something else entirely — but any of these moments can change your life in an instant. The scariest part? We never know when that moment will come. Having a plan means you don't have to face it unprepared.
